Let’s say you’re trying to design your perfect home on an awesome 3D platform like that at FURNISHD. It’s amazing to see how the room is coming together, but there’s one issue that is constantly plaguing you --- storage.

Obviously, a storage shortage is most common in tighter urban living spaces, but it can affect homes of all sizes depending on the design and layout, how many people live there, and what kind of proclivity they have to acquire and accumulate stuff. The tips below should be applicable in homes of all size and scale, so hopefully everyone can benefit.

Tip 1: Look for In-Furniture Storage

This is a good bit of advice for anyone looking to move into a newly bought home or an unfurnished apartment. When storage is in short supply, make your furniture choices work for you! From beds with built-in storage compartments, to stools that open to reveal containers, sofas and armchairs with arm storage, coffee tables that fold out into a desk/table you can use at the sofa (and have additional storage within)…the list goes on.

Tip 2: Look to the Walls

One key thing to do when you’re short on space is to look to the walls. In other words, store “up” and not “out.” Taller storage units that hug the walls not only increase your storage capacity, but do so without sacrificing precious floor space. Even when space isn’t premium but you’re going for a more minimalist look, then the same principle applies!

Tip 3: Side Benches

Benches are a great way to add both seating and storage to your living space. The best places to put them include your mudroom --- or whatever you call the space right around the front door --- where you can throw your shoes, umbrellas, wellington boots and more when you’re not using them. It declutters the space and keeps the floor from getting muddied up.

You can also place storage benches in front of windows. They normally fit well under a window, and double as extra seating when you have company, and all the time housing clutter that is now not messing up your living room, dining room and other spaces.

Tip 4: Racks and Hooks

Two more places in your house that can easily get cluttered with things are the kitchen and the bathroom. A kitchen gets overloaded with appliances, crockery, cutlery and other cooking gear, and bathrooms get overloaded with cosmetics, grooming products and more. It’s relentless!

One of the best things you can do is free up space with racks and hooks that easily attach to your doors --- main door as well as cupboard and even fridge doors or on the side of the fridge --- which then gives you secure space to put your many belongings while keeping surfaces clear and everything still within easy reach.

Tip 5: Wall Recesses

Have you explored the full extent of wall recesses in your home? Some recesses may have been covered up for aesthetic reasons by previous owners. You should confirm if there are any you can use. Building storage into these recesses is another way of boosting storage without having to take up any additional floor space.

The most likely places to find recesses might be in your kitchen and bathroom, but they could be anywhere. In older homes, there may be recesses you can build into that were once put in place to create space for large tubular television sets of the 1980s and 1990s. If you see a recess like that - consider building storage into it!
